<p>Stress hormones like cortisol get released into your bloodstream in massive quantities when you&#8217;re afraid. Cortisol causes your body to store food as fat. To add insult to injury, the fat gets deposited around your waist. This is the most dangerous place for fat to appear (and looks bad too).

<p>The second way that fear can cause you to gain weight is through overeating. When afraid, most people do anything they can to be free from fear, even for a few minutes. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a simple yet powerful way to conquer fear, the Abraham-Hicks Technique is worth trying. It allows you to shift your mental state toward wherever you want it to be, even in cases where your subconscious mind is resisting the change.

<p>To use this technique, you simply start wherever your thoughts are. If you are thinking fearful thoughts (for example, &#8220;I&#8217;m going to forget all the dates I memorized and fail this text!&#8221;) that&#8217;s ok. What you are going to do is consciously choose to think a slightly different, more positive thought. Continuing with the example, you might choose to think something like, &#8220;I would like to believe that I&#8217;m going to remember enough of the dates to pass this test.&#8221; Even though this isn&#8217;t much of a change, it is a tiny step in the right direction. Repeat these tiny steps enough times and you&#8217;ll get major results.
</p>
<p>After several minutes of repeating this thought to yourself, you will start to feel more comfortable thinking that way. You&#8217;re ready to do it again, and consciously decide to think a slightly more positive thought, perhaps something like, &#8220;I&#8217;ve passed lots of tests in my life. I should be able to pass this one too!&#8221; You would spend several minutes repeating this thought, then keep repeating the process with slightly more positive thoughts until you get your mental state where you want it to be.
</p>
<p>It&#8217;s essential when using this technique that you not try to change your thought pattern drastically from one thought to the next. If you try to make too large of a jump at one time, your subconscious will likely rebel. Your subconscious can accept one small change at a time. Large jumps will cause your subconscious to rebel.
</p>
<p>While it can take a bit of time to get a significant effect, the Abraham-Hicks Technique is so easy to use that it is worth trying the next time you feel fearful. You may find, as many others have before you, that this technique changes your life.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The key to Rewriting the Fear is the knowledge that your body reacts to what you believe, not to some absolute outside reality. Convince yourself something is harmful or dangerous and you&#8217;ll feel fear. But if you can instead choose to believe something more positive about the situation, your body will have no reason to generate a fear response. How your body reacts to any situation depends on what you believe about the situation.
</p>
<p>But how can you do this? You don&#8217;t want to lie to yourself, and you don&#8217;t have to. We interpret everything that we experience. And there&#8217;s almost always more than one way to interpret an experience. So the most basic approach to Rewriting the Fear asks you to change your interpretation. Instead of just assuming that your negative first interpretation of a situation is the correct one, come up with other plausible interpretations that fit the facts, but aren&#8217;t negative for you. A simple example will help.
</p>
<p>Your best friend snarls at you and walks away when you ask how their day has been. You can interpret this in the worst possible light and become afraid that your friend doesn&#8217;t like you anymore. But their behavior doesn&#8217;t necessarily have anything to do with you, and you can choose to interpret it differently. Maybe they had a fight with their significant other. Maybe their car broke down. Maybe they&#8217;re sick. Their behavior doesn&#8217;t necessarily have anything to do with you or your friendship.
</p>
<p>If you choose to learn more about Rewriting the Fear, you&#8217;ll find that there are even ways to take this further and turn a negative-seeming situation into a positive one. By exploring alternative interpretations of the situation (rewriting your fears) you will find that your fear lessens as you see all the other, less negative possibilities.
</p>

Did you know that with the right tools you can overcome fear and phobias to live the life you want and deserve? The Sedona Method is one of the powerful tools at your disposal. Let me describe how you can use The Sedona Method to free yourself from them.

<p>The Sedona Method allows you to free yourself from painful or troubling feelings, including fear. It is built around the idea that feelings are only feelings. Our feelings don&#8217;t define us and we can let go of them if we choose to do so. The act of letting go of or releasing these feelings lessens their ability to affect us. When we let go of our fearful feelings, they lose their impact on us and we feel less fearful.
</p>
<p>There are three approaches to take when doing this, and you can combine them in whatever way works best for you. Each of the three is discussed briefly below:
</p>
<ol>
<li>Consciously choosing to let go of the feeling means exactly what it sounds like. You make a conscious decision that you are going to &#8220;step away&#8221; from this feeling, distancing yourself from it. The feeling still exists, but because you have &#8220;moved away&#8221; from it, it is less powerful. With the feeling&#8217;s grip on you loosened, you are free to get on with your life.</li>
<li>Another approach is to allow and accept the feeling. This entails experiencing the feeling and observing its effect on you. The point here is to realize that your feelings can&#8217;t hurt you. You may be afraid but that fear won&#8217;t harm you and doesn&#8217;t have to control you in any way.</li>
<li>The third approach is to embrace the essence of the feeling. To do this you would allow the feeling to come, but instead of letting it go or accepting it, you would actively study it. You would observe the effects of the feeling on your body, study how different thoughts change the feeling and so on. The idea is that if you embrace the feeling and learn from it, it will lose intensity more quickly than if you try to ignore or avoid it.</li>
</ol>

<p>Did you ever wish that you could grab your fears, rip them out of your body, and destroy them once and for all? Assuming you don&#8217;t mind doing it symbolically, you can destroy those fears. It&#8217;s possible to free yourself from fears by symbolically destroying those fears and their effects on you.
</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re up for this, simply get yourself some paper and a pen. Think about the fear you want to destroy. Write everything you can think of about that fear on the paper. Write anything and everything you can about the problem. Be sure to include how the problem makes you feel. Don&#8217;t hold anything back &#8211; no one else will ever see this and you will only have to look at it for a few minutes.
</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;re sure you have gotten it all down, all your thoughts about this fear and how it makes you feel, you&#8217;re ready to destroy it. How you do this is up to you. Burn it, rip it up, flush it down the toilet, do whatever makes you feel best. The thing that you fear is symbolically attached to that piece of paper. Destroy it completely!

<p>Now affirm that just as you are physically destroying the paper that symbolizes your fear, you are also destroying the hold that fear has on you. You&#8217;re purging it from your mind completely. You should start feeling better about the situation quickly.
</p>
<p>Are you wondering what happens if the fear that you&#8217;ve destroyed comes back again? No worries mate. Just destroy it again! A fear may find a way to creep back into your consciousness, but you can always destroy it again using this technique.
</p>

<p>Praying in and of itself can be an antidote to fear. Whether or not your prayers are answered, simply praying with all your concentration will help. Praying with your full attention forces out any fearful thoughts and feelings. There&#8217;s simply no room for them. Without the fearful thoughts to sustain it, your fear will subside and you will find yourself calmer and more relaxed.
</p>
<p>Several kinds of prayer lend themselves particularly well to living free from fear. I&#8217;ve included a short description of each below.
</p>
<p><b>Petitioning Prayer</b> is the kind most of us learned as children. In this kind of prayer we ask that a specific result be granted to us. You might ask that the thing you most fear not come to pass, or that your fear of what is to come should be lifted. You can word this kind of prayer in a way that&#8217;s particularly conducive to becoming free from fear.
</p>
<p><b>Affirmative Prayer</b> goes a step beyond the Petitioning form in that the Affirmative form affirms to whatever higher power you believe in that you are sure things will turn out ok. Your prayer could simply be a statement that you know your higher power is handling the problem and you are thankful for that. Because you are asserting that things will go well, rather than asking that it happen, this is a more powerful form of prayer.
</p>
<p><b>Gratitude Prayer</b> doesn&#8217;t ask for anything or assert that you&#8217;re sure something will work out. Instead, it consists of giving thanks for all the positive things in your life, one thing at a time. Concentrating on remembering and being thankful for all the good things in your life makes it very hard for fear to remain in your heart. All the positive energy this activity generates lifts you out of a dark and fearful state into a light and inspired one.
</p>
<p><b>Silent Communion</b> is a meditative type of prayer. You begin by closing your eyes. Then you picture a cord of intense white light flowing from the universe through the top of your head. The light stops at the very center of your being. From there, the white light diffuses throughout your body, clearing away all fear and any other negative feelings. Joy and peace will soon suffuse your body.
</p>
<p>While these forms of prayer are particularly well suited to dealing with fear, they are not the only forms that are effective. Any type of prayer you like can work, as long as it moves you away from fear and darkness toward happiness and light.
</p>
<p>And don&#8217;t forget that this is only one of the techniques you can use to cure fear and end phobias. There are 21 more (22 in all) you can try.

The rest of this article will introduce you to the concept of Affirmations and how they can help you to live free from fear.</p>
<p>Affirmations are simply positive statements we direct toward ourselves. Whe used to conquer fear, they serve to shift our mental focus from the outcomes we&#8217;re afraid of to a more positive and optimistic state. For these kinds of affirmations, the goal is simple: lessen or eliminate the fear. So is using them.</p>
<p>Hundreds of pre-written affirmations are available online. These work well enough, but you can also create your own that target your exact issues. Creating affirmations that meet your personal needs isn&#8217;t hard once you understand how it&#8217;s done.</p>
<p>This technique does require some effort however. A willingness to repeat your affirmations enough time for them to have effect is a necessity. You can only alter your state of mind very gradually, so going from a generally fearful state to a generally positive one will take a while. This takes time, which means that you must repeat your affirmations numerous times for them to have their full effect. Even so, if the concept of conquering fears using affirmations appeals to you, the end result will be worth the effort.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s say that you are afraid to give a speech. You could create an affirmation like, &#8220;I feel confident and comfortable about giving this speech.&#8221; Repeat this to yourself enough times and you will start to feel more confident and comfortable. That is, you&#8217;ll feel this way unless your subconscious objects by reminding you that you are still scared and uncomfortable.</p>
<p>Thankfully, there are a few ways to get around this subconscious resistance, meaning you can still achieve the state of mind you seek. Once you are fully versed in creating and using affirmations you&#8217;ll be able to work around this problem to get the full benefit of the technique.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you ever found yourself feeling anxious or edgy, even though there seemed to be no reason for it? There are lots of obvious reasons for us to feel fearful in various situations. It makes perfect sense for us to be afraid of things like natural disasters or imminent threats to our life or health. Our fear triggers our body&#8217;s &#8220;fight or flight&#8221; reaction. It floods our systems with adrenaline and prepares us to run for our lives or fight for them.</p>
<p>But if our fears arise at inappropriate times, the &#8220;fight or flight&#8221; reaction is unnecessary, and leaves us feeling edgy, threatened, and defensive even though there is no real threat to us.</p>
<p>Here are some examples of situations where our fearful response is totally inappropriate. We make things worse if we&#8217;re fearful during things like job interviews, social or sporting events, while giving a speech and any other situations where our life isn&#8217;t in danger. Even though we&#8217;re in no physical danger during these times, our bodies react as if we were. And this causes a whole host of issues beyond even our short-term discomfort.</p>
<p>Is your life being disrupted by irrational fears and phobias like these?</p>
<p>No matter how irrational these fears may be, they are based in your own thoughts. Too often, when we&#8217;re faced with situations that could possibly have a negative outcome, we focus on the worst possible outcome instead of all the more positive ones. When you are faced with such a situation, do you start thinking things like this: &#8220;I can&#8217;t give a speech in front of people, what if I mess up? I&#8217;m no good at sports. As soon as I get the ball I&#8217;ll totally embarrass myself. I&#8217;m not going to the doctor&#8217;s office. I coughed twice this morning. What if he tells me I have Swine Flu or some other disease?&#8221; Thoughts like these trigger the same kinds of physical responses that your body makes when your life is in danger. They&#8217;re totally inappropriate for your current situation, but they&#8217;re the way your body reacts to fear.</p>
<h2>How Your Body Reacts to Fear</h2>
<p>When fear is affecting you (even when you don&#8217;t consciously realize it), you can notice several unmistakable signs and symptoms. These signs may include any or all of the following:</p>
<ul>
<li>Tightening of your neck, shoulder, and back muscles</li>
<li>Tightening or queasiness in your abdomen</li>
<li>Tightness or pressure in the chest</li>
<li>Trouble breathing</li>
<li>Pounding heart</li>
<li>Restlessness</li>
<li>Weak or shaky arms and legs</li>
</ul>
<p>Those are just the physical symptoms. Psychological symptoms you may encounter include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Defensiveness</li>
<li>Irritability</li>
<li>Frustration</li>
<li>Anger</li>
<li>Aggression</li>
<li>Sadness</li>
<li>Helplessness</li>
</ul>
<p>If you are constantly in this state of rection to fear, you will likely face major physical and psychological issues like:</p>
<ul>
<li>The inability to sleep soundly</li>
<li>Depression</li>
<li>Major increases or decreases in appetite</li>
<li>Weight loss or weight gain</li>
<li>Inability to trust others</li>
</ul>
<h2>What You Can When Feeling Fearful</h2>
<p>Fortunately for us, there are numerous techniques and tools you can use to get yourself out of a fearful state of mind. One of the simplest is positive self-talk. Rather than worrying about negative things that could happen, you might soothe yourself by saying things like, &#8220;I know I can handle this. Everything&#8217;s going to work out fine eventually. I believe that everything is well.&#8221;</p>
<p>For even better results, you can do things that will increase the chance of a good outcome instead of a bad one. You could, for example, repeatedly rehearse that speech you&#8217;re so afraid of giving until you feel more comfortable, or you could take better care of your health while reassuring yourself that the doctor is going to give you a clean bill of health.</p>
<p>The very act of changing your focus from the fear-inducing possibilities to more positive ones will gradually cause your fear to subside. </p>

<p>Before we can explore how journaling can help you become free from fear, we need to talk about how journaling differs from keeping a diary, as this difference is crucial to the success of this tool. In a diary, you primarily are recording the events of your life. A journal, on the other hand, is a place where you can record your feelings about the events in your life. Journals are often used as places to work through negative feelings about what&#8217;s going on in your life, making them an excellent tool for conquering fear.</p>
<p>Using your journal to work through your feelings about past events (even horrible ones like abuse) can help free you from the fear these past events induce in your current life.
